How a Termite Colony Works: Queen, Workers & Soldiers Explained
A termite colony does not operate as a collection of individual insects; it functions as a single, highly coordinated "superorganism." Inside every underground nest or infested wall cavity, hundreds of thousands—sometimes millions—of termites live under a strict biological caste system where every member has an assigned lifetime duty.
Understanding how the colony communicates, feeds, and protects itself is key to understanding why surface sprays fail and why eliminating the queen is the only way to achieve permanent eradication.
The 3 Castes of a Termite Colony
1. The Reproductives (The Queen & King)
The Queen and King are the founders and biological heart of the colony. The queen's sole purpose is egg production; in mature subterranean colonies, an enlarged queen can lay thousands of eggs each day. She secretes chemical pheromones that regulate colony behavior and prevent other termites from developing reproductive capabilities. Without the queen, the colony eventually collapses.
2. The Workers (The Builders & Destroyers)
Making up roughly 80% to 90% of the entire population, worker termites are blind, wingless, and sterile. Despite their fragile appearance, they do all the heavy lifting: excavating tunnels, building mud shelter tubes, foraging for cellulose, maintaining nursery chambers, and grooming the queen.
Crucially, workers are the only caste capable of digesting cellulose. They nourish the queen, soldiers, and young larvae through mouth-to-mouth and fecal feeding (trophallaxis).
3. The Soldiers (The Defenders)
Soldiers are equipped with enlarged, hardened heads and powerful mandibles designed to defend the colony against predators, particularly ants. When a breach occurs in a mud tube, soldiers rush to plug the gap with their bodies while clicking their heads against tunnel walls to send acoustic alarm vibrations back to the nest.

Why Surface Sprays Fail Against the Colony
